What is a GLASS Project?
The projects for Tandon Honors students in the Global Leaders & Scholars in STEM program consists of a culmination of various experiences, research, and interests related to the Tandon Areas of Research Excellence. Scholars are also required to address the NAE Grand Challenges and think about the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals when doing so. At the end of the 3 years in the GLASS Program, students have a better understanding of the impact they can have on changing the world for the better. GLASS students enter the world as globally competent and socially responsible innovators and engineers!
Abstract
My project explores the global challenge of power distribution and transmission systems as technology evolves faster than the infrastructure that supports it. Through GLASS, I have been able to witness this challenge firsthand and gain a deeper understanding of how the grid is strained by growing demands from artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and rapidly expanding cities. These experiences have shaped the direction of my work and inspired me to examine how these pressures connect to sustainable development, global equity, and the need for modern and resilient energy systems. In my paper, I analyze how innovation, smarter planning, and inclusive solutions can help both developed and developing regions build a more reliable and sustainable future. Through research and reflection, I aim to highlight the importance of redesigning our power systems in a way that strengthens communities and supports global progress.
